General Comments

· Scarabs were made of all types of material including faience, carnelian and amethyst as well as steatite. They were inscribed with personal names and titles, patterns and good luck signs. · Scarabs were also used to commemorate special events; Amenhotep III issued several sets, to commemorate his marriages to Tiye and Gilukhepa, wild lion and bull hunts and the construction of a pleasure lake for Tiye.

Live Horus, mighty bull appearing in Truth, (he of the) two ladies; he establishes laws, he pacifies the Two Lands; Gold Horus, great of strength, who smites the Asiatics; the king of Upper and Lower Egypt, lord of the Two Lands, 4 Nebmaatre, son of Re, Amenhotep (III), ruler of Thebes, given life, 5 (and) the great king's wife, Tiy, may she live, the name of her father is 6 Yuya, the name of her mother is Tjuia. 7 She is the wife of a mighty king 8 whose southern boundary is as far as Karoy 9 (and) the northern as far as Naharin.
